Orthodontic treatment is a significant commitment, but you wore your ClearCorrect aligners as instructed, and now you’re enjoying the reward of a straight, beautiful smile. And, even though the treatment was more comfortable than you thought possible, you’re glad it’s over!

It is a big achievement but wearing your last set of aligners is only the end of the first phase of your orthodontic treatment. Next, you have to commit to wearing your retainer to maintain the alignment you worked so hard to achieve.

Learn to Love Your Retainer

It may sound silly, but you are starting a lifetime relationship with your retainer. The length of time you need to wear them daily typically gets shorter, and those recommendations are based on factors like the extent of your initial misalignment and your age.

In general, your dentist may recommend that you wear your retainer for 12 to 22 hours a day for the first three to six months. Compliance is the key to getting through this stage as quickly as possible.

During the next stage, you will probably be instructed to wear your retainers every night while you sleep. After 12 months of nightly use, your dentist will have you wear your retainer three to five nights a week for the rest of your life.
