Common Flossing Mistakes to Avoid
Here are a few common mistakes you want to avoid:
- Not flossing both sides between a tooth. When you slide the floss between teeth, remember you need to work both sides. Sawing up and down won’t do the job! Take a length of floss, wrap it around one tooth and work it, then repeat on the other side.
- Not changing floss between teeth. It may seem inconvenient, but reusing the same length of floss just transfers the plaque you just removed to another tooth. Floss is relatively inexpensive, so use what you need to do a thorough job.
- Forcing floss between dental work or crowded teeth. This motion can cause the floss to snap up and hit hard against your gums. You can cut your gum this way, leaving you open to infection. Just saw gently back and forth until the floss is fully between your teeth. Ask your hygienist for a recommendation for different types of floss that may work better for you.
