Unfortunately, many of us tend to get a little lazy with our brushing and flossing, and even believe that if there are no apparent problems, everything must be okay.
The Importance of At-Home Oral Hygiene
If you’re not proactive about brushing and flossing, decay and periodontal (gum) disease can quickly take their toll before you even realize there’s a problem. If you want to spend less time in the dental chair, here are three steps you can take:
- Brush twice a day and floss once to help prevent the buildup of harmful plaque and bacteria on your teeth and in your mouth. If not removed, plaque can lead to tooth decay and gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. Bacteria can cause infections and halitosis, also known as bad breath.
- Choose a soft toothbrush and replace it every two to three months and after you have had a cold or flu. Your comfy old, worn-out toothbrush isn't doing much to clean your teeth, and it could be collecting bacteria, so replace it often.
- Don't use a toothpick or other harmful objects. Using them can inflame, irritate, or cut your gums, which may lead to infection or gum disease. Instead, try using a rubber-tipped oral stimulator to clean places that brushing and flossing don’t reach.
